Fluonalp – Switzerland

What do you do when temperatures have been above 30°C (86°F) for weeks, with only a few exceptions, and yet another day of a heat wave is in the forecast?

You grab a few people you like and head for the mountains.

Pleasant temperatures.
Great conversations.
Lots of laughter.
A good Chässchnitte (Swiss cheese toast).
And the most fantastic view imaginable.

That’s exactly what we did.

Fluonalp is located near Giswil in the canton of Obwalden, Switzerland, at 1,538 meters (5,046 feet) above sea level.

There is a restaurant with a spacious terrace and a traditional dining room. They serve good, hearty Alpine specialties.

I had been here before, so even before looking at the menu, I already knew pretty much what I wanted to eat: a Chässchnitte.

The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful.

Coffee is normally served in a standard coffee glass without a handle. A little tricky for me and my hands.

The staff were so kind and looked for a proper coffee cup for me that I could hold normally.
In the end, the owner himself lent me his cup.

Thank you so much!

A Few More Details

There are places to stay overnight at Fluonalp, either in a shared room or in a dormitory-style sleeping area.

You can reach Fluonalp by car or on foot.

Apparently, there are several hiking trails that pass by Fluonalp. I can’t really tell you anything about them, though. As you know, hiking/walking is no longer one of my “core competencies.”

From Fluonalp, you can look directly down at Lake Sarnen in the valley. And if the weather is right and you look really carefully, you might even be able to see Lake Lucerne near Lucerne.

And yes: We’ll be back.

If only for the Chässchnitte.

That sounds rather poetic now, with a slightly bitter note. But it’s not quite like that. No, of course you don’t have to treat us to a coffee.
