Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge – when “next time” becomes “back then”

That sounds rather poetic now, with a slightly bitter note.
But it’s not quite like that.

For me, there are two ways of measuring time.
“When I could still walk properly” and “Since I can no longer walk properly.”

“When I could still walk properly,” we visited Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge near Meiringen in the beautiful Bernese Oberland in Switzerland.

A short, well-secured hiking trail, with some fairly large steps, takes you through the gorge, past waterfalls and through grottos. The water is constantly moving right beside you. It bubbles and foams and gurgles. The water—a shade you rarely see, and so clear …

An impressive piece of nature.

The experience has never really left me.
I always thought it was a shame that we didn’t have quite enough time that day to really linger and enjoy it.
That’s why I always wanted to do this hike a second time and then take plenty of time to let the power of the water sink in.

Unfortunately, that never happened. And now, in the era of “since I can no longer walk properly,” this is another wish I can no longer fulfill.

That doesn’t mean I can’t do anything anymore. There are still so many other things I can do.

But it does mean this: If a place impresses you, take the time to really let it sink in. Don’t wait until next time.
Sometimes there simply isn’t a next time.
