What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS for short) is, simply put, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system — the brain, spinal cord, and eyes.

Every nerve fiber is surrounded by a protective layer called myelin.
You can think of it like the plastic insulation around an electrical cable.
With MS, the immune system attacks this very insulation.
As a result, signals in the nervous system are transmitted more slowly or no longer get through at all.
Depending on which area MS has “attacked,” this can show up in very different ways.

MS is also known as “the disease of a thousand faces” for this very reason. Possible symptoms, which may occur but don’t have to, include: vision problems, numbness, abnormal sensations, muscle weakness, spasticity, difficulty walking, fatigue (exhaustion), coordination problems (balance, fine motor skills, etc.), cognitive problems (word-finding difficulties, processing problems, etc.), bladder and bowel problems, and so on.

The course of MS also varies from person to person. For some people (like me), MS occurs in relapses and symptoms then resolve completely or partially afterward (not like me). For others, symptoms slowly but steadily become worse over time, or one form of MS develops into another.

As of August 2026, there is no cure for MS.
But thanks to research, there are several good medications, known as DMTs (disease-modifying therapies), that can reduce the likelihood of relapses and disease progression.

Why a person develops MS is still not fully understood.
If you look into it, you’ll come across several risk factors.
Spoiler: NONE of them apply to me.

Writing an “About Us” page feels harder to me than writing about almost anything else. What are you supposed to say? “We’re Kurt and Kati, and we’ve been together for more than 25 years.” It’s true. But somehow… it also sounds a little boring. So maybe I’ll simply tell you where you’ve landed instead. This…

  • How do we want to travel?

It’s easy to say: “Come on, let’s go traveling after I retire.” The more we thought about it, the more possibilities came up. And every single one had a catch somewhere. But let’s start at the beginning: What is the best way for us to travel from 2029 onward? That was the beginning of a…
